Session 1: From Trends to Translation – Discovery Pharmacology for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Therapies

This session will outline strategies for model selection based on therapeutic modality, target class, and mechanism of action, highlighting in vitro and in vivo systems for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and discussing how translational model design and data interpretation can strengthen early-stage CNS development.

Tina Loeffler PhD - Presenter

Session 2: Tracking Neurodegeneration: NF-L from Cell Culture to Rodents to Patients

This session will examine neurofilament light chain (NF-L) as a sensitive marker of axonal damage and its application across species and sample types, highlighting NF-L measurement in cell culture models and in vivo rodent systems, with examples spanning Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and lysosomal storage disorders. Discussion will focus on how NF-L enables longitudinal tracking of neurodegeneration from preclinical models to patients.

Session 3: Next-Generation Therapeutics and Biomarkers in Parkinson’s Disease

This session will explore next-generation therapeutic strategies and biomarkers in Parkinson’s disease. It will review current treatment approaches and highlight novel targets from the MJFF Targets to Therapies initiative, including mitochondrial dysfunction, endolysosomal proteins, and neuroinflammation. The discussion will also cover key neurodegeneration markers and how in vitro systems and rodent models are advancing preclinical PD research.

Robert Walmsley

Case Study: In Vivo Application of Extracellular Vesicle-Based Genome Editing Technology

This session will feature a case study with  from Evox Therapeutics, sharing how collaboration with Scantox Neuro supported rapid efficacy testing in preclinical neuroscience. This talk will review the rationale behind model selection, showcase translational outcomes, and reflect on key lessons learned that can inform future CNS drug development programs.

Session 4: Modelling Neurodegeneration in Defined, Consistent Human Cells

This session will explore the use of defined and consistent human cell systems to model neurodegeneration. It will show how scalable, reproducible populations carrying disease-relevant mutations can improve mechanistic studies, enable robust comparisons across experiments, and accelerate drug discovery workflows in CNS research.

Lone Bruhn Madsen

Session 5: The Göttingen Minipig in Drug Discovery Studies

This session will highlight the Göttingen Minipig as a versatile large-animal model in drug discovery and development. It will explore opportunities for modeling CNS and metabolic indications while also drawing on extensive experience in local tolerance studies. Discussion will focus on the advantages of the minipig for translational relevance, administration across multiple routes, and its growing role in bridging discovery to regulatory studies.
